Motivation Statements

Alex Slezak, Native English Teacher. Country: USA
Through out my personal, professional, and educational life span, I have focused my energy on examining systems of social inequality. Growing up in a diverse, yet segregated, city in the United States, I have witnessed the social and economic effects that historically racist policies have had on communities of color. As a white, native English speaker, I have also witnessed and experienced first hand the privilege that white Americans have in the United States. Having seen the obvious, biased effects of racist culture and policies in my own community, I decided to get (and was extremely privileged to be able to pursue) my undergraduate degree in Sociology. During my time at the University of Minnesota, I continued to be involved with my Minneapolis community, and had the honor of supporting research projects concerning social justice issues in my community. Following graduation, I completed a year of National Service at an organization that provided Restorative Justice resources (alternative processes to court proceedings) to youth in the city of Minneapolis. Along with social welfare reform, I believe that criminal justice reform is one of the most pressing issues in the United States. I believe that both my personal experiences as well as my knowledge of U.S. social systems and social cultures will bring a unique perspective to the World Human Rights Cities Forum. I highly value international conversations and believe that our different perspectives can help form potential solutions for the communities we come from. As an English teacher in South Korea, I hope to strengthen my relationships with both Korean and international communities. This forum is great way to do just that.
