Motivation Statements

Park Kyung-woo, Jeonnam Foreign Language High School

Hello, I am Park Kyung-woo, a foreign language high school student in Jeonnam. My motivation for applying to the Youth Forum of the World Forum on Human Rights Cities is to explore the depth and breadth of issues such as the gap between rich and poor, human rights violations, because I want to be together with the people of my class and share my head and talk about these problems. Since my father was an accountant, I had a lot of opportunities to get to know the numbers and the economic phenomena since I was a child, and I became interested in the economy naturally. In the high school campus, we debated economic topics on various topics such as 'British: EXIT from EU' and 'Basic Income Payment Policy'. In addition, I was very interested in fair trade, so I participated in the Korea - India English Symposium and four conventions, and I strongly urged the public to the need for fair trade. In addition, I have also submitted a short essay entitled 'How to revitalize the traditional market in Naju connected with tourism infrastructure', because I also became interested in Economy in the region where I am living. As I surveyed many economic events around the world, I have noticed people who are treated unfairly in the world such as workers in developing countries. Lots of enterprises are only interested in their own benefits, so they don’t care profits, rights of workers. The working conditions in these countries are too bad. When I watched a newspaper in a month ago, I witnessed that many groups of children 6~12 have been sewing soccer balls 17 hours in a day, Furthermore, they had not been treated as a child in that children must be taught in the school, must do lots of activities in order to notice funny things over the world. After I was surprised at this, I decided to talk about many problems about human rights which have happened by lots of atrocious enterprise. So, I submitted an application to this forum.

About half a year ago, Rodrigo Duterte, a president of Philippine, has become a hot issue for his way to implement his policies as president. He legalized a summary execution of drug suspects with the right of president. Since he became a president, more than 4,000 drug suspects in Philippine have been shot dead. Most people in Philippine are living in fear for his impersonal policies. Despite numerous criticisms of many countries and many international human rights organizations, Duterte does keep his firm attitude. Although his policies are effective to Philippine in his view, his fear-mongering policies just infringe the human rights of people. By his policy, most innocent people have been dead. According to the National Police of Philippine, since he allowed police the summary execution of drug suspects, 4,605 people were shot dead by last October. Lots of guiltless people are dead by the summary execution allowed by Rodrigo Duterte. In august, only 5 years old girl was shot while going to school by attack on her grandfather who was drug suspect. Shockingly, her grandfather who was shot had already come off drug a great while ago. Actually, The real purpose of punishment is enlightenment and re-socialization. However, purpose of Duerte’s way to punish is not. In the theory of Yoeng-geun Oh, the professor of Hanyang university, it is said that the goal of punishment is re-socialization and enlightenment of criminals and prevention of repeated crime. However, Duterte’s way to punish is just shooting and encroaches the rights of people to reflect and return to former life. Human rights should be protected in any situations. John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of United States, once said that “The rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.” Like his word, human rights should be respected and are precious thing. However, Duterte invades the human rights of people, saying that “I don’t care about human rights.” Like these, the human rights of people are invaded by his brutal policies. Through this incident, I thought seriously about the protection of human rights. I want to know deeply about 2017 World Human Rights Cities Forum. Also, I hope to improve my English speaking skill through this event. That’s why I apply for 2017 World Human Rights Cities Forum.

Kim Yeonghyeon, Jeonnam Foreign Language High School

I am a student of Jeonnam Foreign language high school. But, I am not that good at English conversation or English discussion. I am so shamed of it, and I want to improve my English skills and be more proud of my English. I heard about this program from my native English teacher. When I heard about it, I think it is a really good chance during high school life. I wanted to have a meaningful experience with my friends. It would be only one chance. Also, the UNESCO Theme, "human rights" was what I have seen too frequently. Whenever school holds a program, the theme is almost about human rights, sustainable development, and so on. At this chance, I will learn about the human rights and grow up as a world citizen. I am especially interested in teachers’ human rights problems. These days, it is often said that teachers’ rights are falling as students’ rights go up. There are many accidents caused by the teachers’ rights falling. Some students ignore teachers’ indication and even conduct violence to their teachers. Long time ago, the students’ rights were lower than teachers’ rights, which caused too strong punishment and sometimes coercion. Nowadays, the adverse effect is happening in many schools. If the students’ rights fall like past, strong disciplines and punishment will be conducted to students. But, if teachers’ rights are low like these days, teachers will have less power and the education quality will be lowered. I want to discuss about these education problems, and other children who can’t study well because of their poor country. 2017 World Human Rights Cities Forum will help my curiosity satisfied. I want to learn many things about human rights and hope human rights’ of people all around the world to be respected. I expect it will be a really good experience.

Kim Yoosin , Jeonnam Foreign Language High School

Nowadays, there are so many great and small conflicts in countries such as Syria, Iraq and Palestine. In those troubled parts of the world, rains of bullets and bombs indiscriminately head to both soldiers and civilians, and kill all of them. To avoid the danger, helpless civilians have no choice but to leave their residences and find new ones. Through this process, more than 65 million of people became refugees, and sadly, a half of them are under 18. It means, too many children just like us are in serious danger of their lives while we in South Korea are in this safe classroom. Furthermore, more than 4 hundred millions of children are suffering from severe poverty.
In spite of this tremendous number of sufferers, too many people around the world, especially people in developed and advanced countries, are not worrying about the seriousness of these complex problems of armed conflicts and poverty, so they do not try to actively help them. While this kind of people don't concern the countries which are in severe dispute, the very sufferers, the number of whom is more than 65 million, in those countries are just ceaselessly groaning in horrible pain.
Actually, it might be true that stories of sufferers on the opposite side of the earth do not appeal well to us. However, as technologies are highly developed, the world is being more rapidly globalized. And the distance between us and them is getting shorter. It means that their tragedy must not be only their own problem anymore. Therefore, to relieve their misery, I am eager to be part in World Human Right Cities Forum 2017, Discussion Group and contribute to the discussion for seeking out some desirable ways to guarantee the better human rights for all. I will feel honored if I can get this great opportunity to participate in the Forum. I am looking forward to the discussion with many people.
